Eccles Theater Master Plan
BLOCK 70, DOWNTOWN | SALT LAKE CITY, UT
Muir Architects led the master planning for the Eccles Theater and its surrounding Block 70 district, shaping a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented cultural hub in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City.
The plan integrates a world-class performing arts center with a private 24-story office tower, 111 Main, utilizing air rights to maximize a constrained urban site. This approach established a dynamic mixed-use environment that balances cultural, commercial, and civic functions.
A central focus of the master plan was enhancing the pedestrian experience. Large city blocks were reimagined to improve walkability, most notably through the transformation of Regent Street into an active plaza supporting festivals, retail, and smaller-scale performances, strengthening connections between the theater and the surrounding urban fabric.
Envisioned by the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, the project was designed to serve as a cultural catalyst—attracting first-run touring Broadway productions while elevating the city’s cultural and economic profile. The development also achieved LEED Gold certification, reflecting a commitment to high-performance environmental standards.
The theater includes a range of public and performance spaces. The Delta Performance Hall is a 2,500-seat, state-of-the-art proscenium theater. The Regent Street Black Box provides a flexible 150- to 250-seat venue for community and experimental performances. A six-story glass grand lobby features retractable walls that open directly onto Main Street, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. Additional public amenities include a rooftop loggia, second-floor terrace, art gallery, and a bistro café.
