Downington Avenue Multi-Family Housing
Salt Lake City, Utah
The site for these three staggered townhouses overlooks the historic Allen Park which was the original animal zoo for Salt Lake and Emigration Creek as it meanders towards the Great Salt Lake. The buildings mark the prominent corner along the tree lined 1300 East boulevard. The design responds to the formal avenue street scape on the north with a rather closed configuration bounded by more utilitarian spaces like restrooms, kitchens and closets. The south elevation that faces the park transforms in character with more inhabited living spaces, open decks and staircase roof access.
The design acknowledges the latent flooding potential of the Creek and micro ecology of the park by limiting disturbance during construction and access in the completed design. Adaptability is central to the design with closets that can be converted to elevators for accessibility, power for charging stations, home offices, solar arrays and roof top garden space.
