Alta Residence

Conceived as a skiing getaway for two New York based attorneys,  the house is perched over the Little Cottonwood Creek as though a boulder dislodged from the site. Because of the severe weather in the canyon, snow can literally envelope the house.  A central cylindrical shape housing the stairs acts as a periscope to capture light above the drifted snow.

The house is designed with an architectural concrete structural frame and limestone panels at its base. Balconies extend from the interior yet sheltered within the building shell. The building adds a certain refinement and response to the brutal quality of the rock escapement.
